Sensei James Kearney
Sensei Kearney started training in Shotokan Karate in 1973, and has trained with many
of the best Shotokan teachers such as S. Kato, K. Enoeda, and T. Kase.
After receiving his 1st and 2nd Dans Sensei opened
the Thurles karate club and did very well teaching many promising
students, especially during the 1980s.
In 1986 he joined the AMA UK and continued to develop himself, his students and his
club through constant study. Sensei eventually earned his 3rd,
4th and 5th dans, and in 2006 was evaluated and
promoted to the rank of 6th dan by Sensei Schucker and the Promotion
Board. Prior to that time, Sensei had begun to explore Taiji Quan,
feeling that it is the perfect compliment to the predominantly hard
style of karate he had thus far practiced. As he become more and more
interested in the internal martial arts he continued to train and
research in both hard and soft systems.
Sensei's wide ranging experience allows him to relate both hard and soft elements to
his students. He also includes a full syllabus of traditional Okinawan kobudo training with
the bo, sai, tonfa, kama, etc.
