For promotion to all
kyu, gup, or class ranks below black belt an individual must have at
least two months time in grade (TIG) for each rank.

Reduction of up to 50% TIG is possible for individuals who demonstrate
exceptional levels of competence and dedication as
defined by the six awards presented annually at our SMAA Awards Dinner.
Reduction of TIG is NOT automatic when an individual is presented an award, it is
merely a possibility. No reduction of TIG will be considered to those who
do not meet the award criteria.
